  • My laundry has been sitting in the washing machine for about a week. I'm sure I'm going to have to find the jug of vinegar.
    • I read somewhere it's a good way to remove mildew smell.
    • I always wash in cold water, which usually gives me a little more leeway for when I need to unload the washer but this is the longest and I'm expecting the worst
  • After two wash cycles, I'll turn off water at the source because I need to remove a cartridge behind a shower handle. I've never done it before but I'm going to tackle fixing a faulty shower cartridge tonight. While I'm at it, I need to update the handle.
  • Because I need to go to the hardware store anyway, I might as well pick up a sealant for a bathroom sink that cracked last week. We'll see if I can get away with not replacing the sink until I'm ready to replace the counter, too.
    • A heavy metal wall hanging fell and struck the basin, casting a couple of cracks dramatically along the bottom.

I wash my clothes with distilled white vinegar maybe every other week? I read somewhere that it boosts the cleaning power. I will say that my clothes do smell more fresh when I used the vinegar

Glad to know I'm not alone in hearing about vinegar's super power!

How to Make Coffee (simplified)
2/18/2020 06:18 PM
  • Pick out your coffee
    • I can't seem to work up enthusiasm for any specific type of coffee; dark v. light, brand name v. house brand... I pick out coffee according to cost. Maybe that's like you. Maybe you swear by Kona. What am I missing?
      • I enjoy flavored coffees, too. Hazelnut? Sure! Vanilla? Yup. Butter pecan? Serve it up!
    • What I do buy into is using whole beans.
  • Grind those whole beans
    • I keep a grinder next to the coffee maker. I'm careful to not use my grinder for anything else.
    • I really like to throw a dash of cinnamon or cardamom in with the grounds. Try it. Let me know what you think. It'll change you.
  • Steep in HOT water for 5 minutes
    • Using a french press or a slow drip has always tasted really good to me.
    • BUT use the coffee maker if you want. Honestly, all of this ritual helps give people space and connects us to the moment. But a coffee maker works.
  • Press and pour
    • Dress according to taste- I like a splash of cream or milk and couple teaspoons of Splenda.
    • Enjoy

What I'm Listening To
2/12/2020 06:10 PM
It's nice to listen to something while driving, walking the dog, or working. These are the podcasts I'm listening to now.
  • The Adventure Zone
    • This is a humor podcast first and foremost; three brothers and their dad start playing DnD. Its popularity blows up. Eventually, they dabble in other RPG mechanics as they take turns being the DM and telling other stories.
  • Alt Latino
    • It's there in the name: alternative latino music. Sometimes there are guest interviews but always there's delightful music and perspectives.
  • Stop Podcasting Yourself
    • 2 Canadian comedians interview other comedians. They make mundane topics charming. Every episode is hilarious.
    • These 2 hosts recently wrapped of up a separate podcast called Our Debut Album; a true treasure of creativity and humor.
  • The Curious Cases of Rutherfor and Fry
    • Scientists answer submitted questions that run the gamut in beautiful British accents.
  • 99% Invisible
    • Well produced non-fiction stories about the design around us and is mostly invisible to us.
  • Welcome to Night Vale
    • Fiction told mostly from the perspective of a community radio host to his strange desert community.
  • The Memory Palace
    • Short form non-fiction with reliably solid pay-off.
  • Hello From the Magic Tavern
    • Improv narrative. The premise: Chicagoan falls through a magical portal to a different dimension where he meets fantasy creatures in a magical world.

Ooh if you're looking for more I heavily recommend Behind the Bastards and Oologies. The first one is about telling the gory details of our history and delves in to some of the reasons why everything is terrible. The host is a conflict journalist and is also pretty funny at times. The latter is a science podcast where the hostess is a science communicator who interviews a different expert scientist every week, a different x-ology. It's extremely informative

Ooh! Thanks for the recommendations. Both sound good.

I've listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History- I'm guessing you've listened to these. I need to listen to more.

I have! I enjoy it immensely. I was surprised (happily) to see Aaron got an Amazon show from it. It shares the same name. He also has another called Cabinet of Curiousities. I've listened to a couple and like what I've heard.

What else do you listen to? My list is far from comprehensive as it's only a snapshot of what's scheduled to be listened to next. I may have listened to it, but I'm always looking for new podcasts to add to the mix.

I listen to Aaron's Unobscured. The first season was about the Salem Witch Trials. FASCINATING historical stuff. Second season dealt with Spiritualism and all the sociopolitical stuff surrounding the movement.

I also subscribe to The Wild Hunt (VIKINGS on History Channel recap/discussion), The British History Podcast, and History of the English Language Podcast, among others. :)

What I'm Watching
2/11/2020 12:49 PM
  • Star Trek: Discovery
On a Star Trek streak. Just wrapped up Enterprise (mostly yuck) to clear the way for Discovery and Picard. I really, really like it.
  • Picard
Love having Picard back in my life.
  • The Circle
Netflix social media reality television... I don't watch much, if any, reality tv (the closest I seem to get to is The Great British Bake Off/Show and Nailed It). I'm enjoying it.
Queueing up
  • The Good Place (pick back up)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (rewatch with the kiddo)
  • Locke & Key (heard good things)
  • Marriage Story (ditto)
  • The Expanse (tri-tto)
  • The Witcher (it's trending)

What I'm Playing
2/10/2020 12:57 PM
  • Destiny 2
A year plus in and still going strong... but when I've been this involved in other games, there's been a hard stop and I'm starting to suspect it's approaching.
  • Red Dead Redemption
Been playing this one off and on and need to get back to it. That's a hard way to play because the controls are not easy to use. Rockstar Games character movement suck.
  • Spiderman
My older television was introducing lag which is a huge detractor to this game and I shelved it. Ready to try again!
  • Wordscapes
Free to play mobile game. I like word games and this has heavy flavors of Boggle.
  • Castlevania (NES)
    Replaying the classics!

I have watched him play many video games over the years. I tried, a very long time ago, to play something he played and got completely lost. I can't even figure out how to make the controller do what you want, and keeping track of maps or landscapes or anything is beyond me when under pressure like that. I need a delete key. lol The graphics are fantastic, though.

I get it. Some games can be hard to play. And I've found it's easy to get out of the habit when there's a lot of other things vying for your attention. I figure it's the same for starting up the habit. You've got plenty of other things going on, fersher.

I heard that too. They're latest updates seem to be a bit buggy. People lost inventory and currency, a huge problem for game-as-a-service title.

I had such a massive D1 problem. I played that game from launch till D2 with only maybe a month or so away from it the whole time. Vanilla D2 cured me of that obsession so fast. I never went back to it.

tbh it feels sometimes like I shrugged off a coke problem.

I never played D1. I heard it was dense but fun.

I've found a balance (2x a week) for these multi-player games with friends that doesn't tax me too much. Before we had that schedule and spent whole weekends and many weeknights playing, during breaks between titles was when I felt like the game was playing me. I need other things in my life to feel like I'm fully living it. Even if some of those other things aren't necessarily breaking me away from the screen. :P

It's sooooo easy to get lost down the Destiny rabbit hole-- or all those other big live service games. FOMO is REAL.

Honestly just typing what I did to you about D1 has me itching and being like, hey you should reinstall, your titan is just sitting there, what are you doing.

You're a warlock main right? I feel like I can smell warlock on you.

A Faint Memory
2/7/2020 05:46 PM
  • Walking along a sidewalk, creamy and clean
    • purple flowers with fuzzy, dark green leaves in moistened soil at curbs
  • The air is warm, fresh, and dry
  • The library is solid with a forgettable interior
    • cutting out paper bones
    • joints are brassy paper-fasteners
    • inky mimiographed lines and medical names
    • stored away in an office envelope
  • The memory is secured when the delicate bones tumbled out of the envelope

A Post About Feelings
2/6/2020 05:33 PM
  • There's a specific feeling I'm thinking about right now. Perhaps you've had it too. A result of youth, combining optimism and confident autonomy. Every emotional segment was where I left it and events moved at the pace I advanced them. The mornings were crystaline. The evenings contented surrender. The stuff in between was a combination of control, optimism and responsibility.
I know the feeling is still within range- which causes me some anxiety. It's there, just outside of my day-to-day. I have too many uncomfortable pieces pressing upside me. Too many other people handing me their responsibilities too.
  • There's another feeling, this one resting on my sternum. It's semi-heavy and flat. Not oppressive but constant. It's pressure, an urge, an itch to buck.
  • The last feeling mutes the first two. It's a mix of contentedness and love- but it's not fully either.

Galentine's Day is February 13
2/4/2020 01:21 PM
Any other Parks and Recreation fans here?

Lesley Knope did much to bolster me: she also being a naturally earnest, passionate, sentimental optimist. Her invention, "Galentines Day", became an instant classic, but this is the first year I'm gonna intentionally celebrate it.

To prep for it
  • made a list of my gals
  • decided on the form of communication (postcards/notecards)
  • assembled the materials
  • making another list of the specific message for each gal
Next week I'll send them out, hopefully surprising, and postally-hugging the supportive lady-friends in my life. If I can muster it, I'll share in-progress pictures in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed.

What I Hope to Get Here
2/3/2020 02:13 PM
  • A space to express myself
    • To explore the impulse
    • Push the inside of my brain around
    • Ask myself "what?" and "why?" and grunt
  • Build up that sweet writing and creation habit once again
  • Hear from some old friends
  • To document this
