What I'm Listening To
2/12/2020 06:10 PM
It's nice to listen to something while driving, walking the dog, or working. These are the podcasts I'm listening to now.
  • The Adventure Zone
    • This is a humor podcast first and foremost; three brothers and their dad start playing DnD. Its popularity blows up. Eventually, they dabble in other RPG mechanics as they take turns being the DM and telling other stories.
  • Alt Latino
    • It's there in the name: alternative latino music. Sometimes there are guest interviews but always there's delightful music and perspectives.
  • Stop Podcasting Yourself
    • 2 Canadian comedians interview other comedians. They make mundane topics charming. Every episode is hilarious.
    • These 2 hosts recently wrapped of up a separate podcast called Our Debut Album; a true treasure of creativity and humor.
  • The Curious Cases of Rutherfor and Fry
    • Scientists answer submitted questions that run the gamut in beautiful British accents.
  • 99% Invisible
    • Well produced non-fiction stories about the design around us and is mostly invisible to us.
  • Welcome to Night Vale
    • Fiction told mostly from the perspective of a community radio host to his strange desert community.
  • The Memory Palace
    • Short form non-fiction with reliably solid pay-off.
  • Hello From the Magic Tavern
    • Improv narrative. The premise: Chicagoan falls through a magical portal to a different dimension where he meets fantasy creatures in a magical world.

Ooh if you're looking for more I heavily recommend Behind the Bastards and Oologies. The first one is about telling the gory details of our history and delves in to some of the reasons why everything is terrible. The host is a conflict journalist and is also pretty funny at times. The latter is a science podcast where the hostess is a science communicator who interviews a different expert scientist every week, a different x-ology. It's extremely informative

Ooh! Thanks for the recommendations. Both sound good.

I've listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History- I'm guessing you've listened to these. I need to listen to more.

I haven't heard of that one! There's a billion podcasts out there it's so rare that I meet anyone who is in to any of the same ones that I am and vice versa

I have! I enjoy it immensely. I was surprised (happily) to see Aaron got an Amazon show from it. It shares the same name. He also has another called Cabinet of Curiousities. I've listened to a couple and like what I've heard.

What else do you listen to? My list is far from comprehensive as it's only a snapshot of what's scheduled to be listened to next. I may have listened to it, but I'm always looking for new podcasts to add to the mix.

I listen to Aaron's Unobscured. The first season was about the Salem Witch Trials. FASCINATING historical stuff. Second season dealt with Spiritualism and all the sociopolitical stuff surrounding the movement.

I also subscribe to The Wild Hunt (VIKINGS on History Channel recap/discussion), The British History Podcast, and History of the English Language Podcast, among others. :)
