A week in

I'm surprisingly satisfied with how this place is shaping up. I'm kind of irritated it took so long considering this was supposed to be an August/September launch, but I get why it happened the way it did.

There's a bunch of features I want to add to this myself, but it's mostly fluff. I want an embedded discord channel, trophies, etc etc. Minor layout adjustments to group stuff as well. And Pal suggested some notifications for Ring activity, just a general notifier on the inbox page for stuff that's happening elsewhere on the site. I think that would be ideal as well. Personally, I want a streaming theater because I love that kind of thing, but this is all so, so far out of scope we'd have to do a second round of fundraising.

I'm obviously game for that, but I think it's a big ask considering a good number of the people who donated haven't actually used the site yet. I don't think we'd be able to raise another $1200 so quickly. Maybe next year, once the dust is settled and people have moved in. I'm torn between actively promoting it, and keeping it kind of intimate. I firmly believe that community size is equivalent to quality, and if we had 600 users here right now I'm not sure I have the controls necessary to moderate it.

Priorities for me are spam prevention-- IE keeping Russian and Chinese bot shit out of this place, and having some general groundrules about what's better suited for rings versus a blog.

Stuff to consider moving forward. Right now I'm just glad it's being used.

So I've applied to a couple of rings and haven't gotten approved. I applied within the first day or so. I don't know if they're just dead or if I was rejected or if there's an issue with approvals. Are rings working? If you get rejected would it be removed from your activity page or give you a notification or something? Maybe if the ring-leaders are inactive it should default after a set amount of time?

Edit: I lied. One of the rings accepted me, the other is just sitting.

If you get rejected it should in theory go back to being available on browse. But rings seem to be working totally fine, at least the ones I'm in.

They're totally at the control of the owner, I haven't got multi-admin set up yet so if the owner doesn't log on often or check it you could end up sitting in the queue to join forever.

I'll work on getting notifications set up for acceptance, it should be in the update to come. In theory.

I'm finally here.  I tend to favor the intimate feeling, especially for now, though I'm not sure that was intended to be a poll.

Oh, polls!  And forums!

No, not the forums.  Last time I suggested that, I killed MindSay and made Underground1986 angry.  Don't take my suggestions seriously.

I think the Rings do a good job at being the forums without the viagra/cialis spam, so that's a plus for everybody. And I'm with you on the intimate. At its height pre-myspace, Mindsay had ~75,000 registered users but it never really felt that way. I'm hoping even with some modest user growth we feel the same.

Forums was in jest, but a simple native poll option with radio or checkboxes might be fun, enabled in blog posts and rings might be fun.

Ruin My Life

I was just recording for my friend Jason's podcast Ruin My Life, where you forcefully expose the hosts to a subculture/movie/thing you really, really obsess over. I talked for an hour and a half about the Pixies, so here's their song Daniel Boone, it's beautiful, I love you goodbye.

Hello It Is The Blog
1/18/2020 10:29 PM
Last night we had about 70 people sign up for Satyrn in around 12 hours. I think there's still a need for this sort of thing, maybe in particular with people who used them before. I don't necessarily think it's something that needs to be done every day, but knowing it's here is very satisfying. Please test the data download if you'd like.

For me, personally, this sort of public dispersal of brain toxins was always incredibly theuraputic, something I didn't really come to realize until it was stripped away. Not necessarily just Mindsay, but blogging as a whole. I continued to utilize Livejournal until recently with my learning of their Russian acquisition. I always appreciated how Mindsay felt very much like you could built a little micro-community through the visitor list. I consider that a vital feature. Nobody else ever had that, really. You always felt like an island. If someone found you it was entirely by accident.

That beiing said, privacy sometimes is important. Private and group entries are working, alledgedly, but if there's ever any breakdown of that let me know immediately. I consider that a world-breaking stop the trains bug. There's no mysterious admin here, it's just me and the people who coded it.

Besides this--

I have a moderate to medium sized bug list/req. changes for next week so far.

-Clicking reply on a comment doesn't archive it (doesn't un-bold it)
-Recent visitors list breaks after ~11 people come to your blog. This is duct taped for now but if you saw blogs being unreadable last night that's why
-Clicking a date on the blog calendar, then another date while on that date breaks everything
-Voting for a post on the users blog instead of on a specific entry casts a vote for every votable entry
-Rings duplicate sometimes. shrug.
-Some optimizations are needed, especially for mobile. The landing page is too large and takes people, on average, about 5-7 seconds to load according to analytics, which is an eternity and unneccessarily high data usage for a text based website.
-A couple of views are still broken on mobile (Blog archive for one)

PS, if you start a ring, make sure you approve applicants or no one can see your posts.

What is voting used for here?
Also not a big deal but just FYI the calendar is crammed together (on chrome), so it says SUNMOTUEWEHUFRI SAT

Posts with the most votes appear the next day on top rated on home, that's all really. The vote button disappears from posts after 24 hours.

The calendar isn't designed to be responsive (it goes away on mobile), so if you use a screen small enough to not trigger the mobile/tablet design but to not big enough to display itself properly it looks like shit ass mega butt.

What Are Rings?
1/17/2020 08:45 PM
I'll get this linked on the rings page next week--

Rings are private feeds (similar to tumblr/twitter) curated by a single user. They can be about any topic or anything you want. The owner of the ring dictates who can join and post. They have to approve each member, and can control membership by removing/banning people or content at any time. Only the approved members of the ring can see it's content. All posts self-prune and are permanently deleted after 7 days.

Podcast
1/12/2020 01:02 AM
I started talking about doing a serialized podcast ~the summer after I finished the last web-project I did, and then winter of '16 my girlfriend at the time bought me a nice microphone for it. I started writing various bullshits that were bad, and then settled on doing an adaptation of an adaptation of a movie we made in college with nerf guns because I really liked that thing.

I wrote half the episodes and then cast the thing, and then dragged my ass for a few more months then finished writing it. Recording started in spring of 2017.

Then it stalled out, then I recorded more in 2018. I started editing and then quit. Too many uncast voices. Then I recorded even more in 2019. In October, I finally put up the first episode. I was over it. I hated it. It sucked.

It didn't really. Not that much. It got ~150 plays. The first episode.

And tonight, at ~11:00pm I finished editing the last episode of the first season. Finally. I was 27 when I started this. I've been listening to my voice from that era for so long. I'm 31 now. But it's done.

At last.
